While we do recommend buying a new PC with Windows 7 preinstalled to get the best experience, the truth is that many PC makers seem to go out of their way to screw up what should be a happy experience. They do so by loading down their new PCs with extensive collections of largely useless utilities, a practice that s gotten so out of hand that the industry has adopted the term crapware to describe it. Fortunately, there are a few things you can do to avoid crapware. First, you can purchase PCs only from those PC makers that offer no crapware, such as Dell. Or you can simply not worry about it and download a wonderful free utility called the PC Decrapifier (www.pcdecrapifier.com), which automates the removal of trialware and other annoying crapware that PC makers tend to preinstall (you know, for your convenience). The PC Decrapifier, shown in Figure 6-12, is free for personal use and highly recommended if you re looking for that new-PC smell. However, be sure to uncheck any items you do want to keep, as some of the so-called crapware that PC Decrapifier finds might actually be useful.

A more natural way to group subassemblies is by considering relative motion. However, if your only consideration is ease of modeling, then this is probably the method to use.

Defrag is short for Disk Defragmenter. In 5, you learned about files and folders and gained an understanding of how your computer really stores data: that is, not really by filename and directory but rather in tiny data bits that are actually scattered all over the hard drive. Over time, as you call up files, move them around, carve pieces out of some of them and insert them in others, and then resave them, the data bits already scattered all over the hard drive become even more scattered. As a result, the computer has a harder time retrieving these items. This makes your machine take longer and longer to open, save, and close your files. This is where Disk Defragmenter (Defrag) can help. Imagine a desk at which you do your work. Over time, it becomes more and more cluttered. You might not want to throw anything away, yet you need more space. If you take your arms and push everything on top of the desk away from the middle, you clear more space by consolidating all your clutter at the outer edges. In a way, this is just what Defrag does: It consolidates your data, making the file retrieval and restoring operations much more efficient and in the process, helps your computer do it more easily and, therefore, faster.
