All modern Web servers create log files containing a detailed record of each visitor request. Each record typically contains the date and time, the requested page, the visitor s IP address, the visitor s browser identification string, and additional data. As individual records, this information can be useful for investigating events in progress at a specific time. Most site operators, however, find usage information far more useful in aggregate. They want to know how many hits (requests) the site is receiving per day, per week or per month; which are the most and least popular pages; which browsers are used the most; and many other statistics. This chapter explains how to retrieve and display such statistics.

A variety of commercial applications are available for summarizing and reporting Web server log statistics. If your provider has installed one of these, the provider s Help pages will probably explain how to display the resulting statistics. The Microsoft FrontPage Server Extensions and Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services can both analyze Web server logs, too. This capability is inactive by default but an administrator can activate it by configuring a single Web page.

For information about configuring the FrontPage Server Extensions or Windows SharePoint Services to perform usage analysis, refer to the section, Displaying Data in a Top 10 List, later in this chapter.

Once the server extensions or SharePoint are collecting usage statistics, you can view the results in Microsoft Office FrontPage 2003. 17, Keeping Your Web Site Up-toDate, explained how to do this. Unfortunately, that procedure requires that anyone who views statistics for a Web site must also have authority to open the site in FrontPage: that is, to create, modify, and delete pages. The remainder of this chapter describes how the Top 10 List component can display the same data to Web visitors, even if they can t open the site in FrontPage.

Top 10 Lists provide a quick and easy way to display Web site statistics to Web visitors with no special authority. Seven Top 10 Lists are available, and you can provide all, some, or none of them to visitors as you choose. Here are the seven lists:
